We’ll show you how to get started, Build Your First Beehive and Harvest your very own Natural Local Honey !
We're David and Bear Baker, father and son beekeepers from Oklahoma, You might know us as the founders of The Beekeeping 101 guide, one of the best online resources for beginner beekeeping education and support.
Generations of my family have been beekeepers, starting with my grandfather, who tended to his bees in the fertile grounds of Southern California. The Great Depression was winding down and my grandfather need more money to provide for his family. He started beekeeping and worked to help pollinate the crops and orchards in the farming community. With hard work and determination, he was able to use the profits from his honey production to help purchase his first house, a symbol of his success as a beekeeper.
My father grew up alongside my grandfather, helping him keep bees and harvest the honey when he was just a boy. The rich soils of the Imperial Valley provided the perfect conditions for growing crops and raising bees. Together, my father and grandfather worked tirelessly to keep their bees healthy and happy, and their hard work paid off with extra income and LOTS of honey ! When our family moved to Oklahoma, we knew that we wanted to continue our tradition of beekeeping, but the climate was vastly different from what we were used to. The hot, humid summers and cold, harsh winters made it challenging to keep our bees alive and healthy. We made a lot of mistakes and lost many hives along the way, but we learned valuable lessons that we still carry with us today. We adapted and changed our approach to beekeeping to succeed in this new environment.
Now, I'm proud to say that my son is learning the art of beekeeping from me. Beekeeping is more than just producing honey. It's about passing down knowledge from one generation to the next, keeping a small part of nature in balance, and building a symbiotic relationship with these incredible creatures. As we care for our bees, we learn valuable lessons about hard work, dedication, and the importance of working with nature rather than against it. Beekeeping is a way of life that teaches us to slow down, appreciate the beauty around us, and cherish the connections we make with these tiny but mighty creatures. We are passing down our family's knowledge and experience through four generations, and we're excited to share it with you. Let us guide you as you begin your journey into the wonderful world of beekeeping!
